Except for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, most dietary supplement are a poor substitute for a balanced diet. Protein supplements may help people eating low protein diets retain muscle mass, but supplemental protein does not increase muscle mass. Most people do not need supplemental protein, vitamins, and minerals.
