Sugar is a leading contributor to weight gain and type 2 diabetes. Some low carb diets eliminate many foods providing natural sugars without providing any scientific evidence. Some people believe anyone with type 2 diabetes should not eat sweet fruit. Research shows people eating high plant food diets including sweet fruit are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
For many overweight Americans, the problem is not foods providing natural sugars, the problem is diets high in processed foods with added sugars.

Carbohydrates are fiber, sugars, and starch.
Diets high in sugar and starch can overwhelm the pancreases ability to make insulin. Insulin allows cells to use sugar for energy. Unused sugar is converted to body fat.
A constant supply of sugar can dangerous increase blood sugar levels resulting in type 2 diabetes. In most cases type 2 diabetes is caused by diet and lifestyle. The risk of type 2 diabetes increase with a sedentary lifestyle.
Low carb diets have been around for decades. Today two popular low carb diets are Paleo and Keto. Some low carb diets restrict carbohydrates to 50 grams a day compared to 200 to 300 grams a day for many balanced diets.
Is it necessary to severely restrict carbohydrates to prevent or cure type 2 diabetes. In most cases, the answer is no.

Some American fad diets demonize carbohydrates; sugars and starches.
They either severely restrict or totally eliminate refined carbohydrates, primarily refine white flour and sugar, but also starchy white potatoes and rice.
Why should Americans eliminate refined carbs when billions of people around the world rely on them for their major source of glucose?
The answer is simple, it is easier to ask dieters to give up carbohydrate rich foods instead of educating them about how they can enjoy these foods (cakes, cookies, pies, pastries and more) and still loose weight.
